The Rotary Club organization was first conceived by a young attorney, Paul Harris. While living in Chicago, he wished to make a connection with the business community in a city where he did not come from and knew few people. He started with a small group of business people meeting for lunch at one another’s offices. While first conceived as a means of fellowship and networking, the opportunity to do social good for the community soon became apparent. This concept caught on in other cities and ultimately through out the world to become Rotary International. There are currently over 1.2 million members in over 33,000 clubs located in nearly every country in the world.
The Lexington Rotary Club has borne the Rotary International standard of Service Above Self since its founding 81 years ago. We are men and woman of different ages, in different professions enjoying each other’s fellowship. We appreciate and respect the value each individual’s vocation or profession. We view our work life as a way of serving society and community with the highest ethical standards.
Each Lexington Rotarian is committed to donating to the Rotary Foundation, the charitable arm of Rotary International. Through the foundation we have all but eradicated polio from the face of the earth, and we will not stop until there is not one new case on the planet.
Rotary International is now focused on a Future Vision for the world. Our efforts are going to be in the following five areas:
Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution
Water and Sanitation
Maternal and Child Health
Basic Education and Literacy
Economic and Community Development
Our Lexington club is committed to helping our community and our world with our ongoing projects. A few of these are:
Low Income Housing: The Lexington Rotary sponsors the Minuteman Regional Vocational Technical School’s home building project in Lexington.
Medical Supply donation to earthquake affected area of Parkistan: Over a million dollars of medical equipment donation funded by a grant from our Rotary District 7930 was coordinated by Lexington Rotary.
Awarding $10,000 in scholarships annually: Ten $1,000 scholarships are given to ten deserving college bound graduating seniors.
Support of Rotary’s End Polio Now
The Lexington Rotary meets weekly at noon on Mondays. We enjoy lunch together, have a brief business meeting to discuss our current and future projects and events, and listen to a speaker present something of mutual interest to our members. There is plenty of time for humor and well-intentioned ribbing. A member can propose $1 fines for anything from wearing a loud shirt or blouse, an unusual tie or sitting at a table that does not have a guest. Our meetings always adjourn at or before 1:30 p.m.
Membership in the Lexington Rotary is open to all adults. We welcome you to attend one of our meetings. The cost of attendance is $20 to cover the attendee’s meal. Individuals who find our club a good personal fit, then need to be sponsored by a member of the club. Even though you may not know a Lexington Rotarian, do not let that keep you from exploring an important opportunity to be of service to your community. Call me, club President David Brother, at 781-771-4709, and I will be happy to discuss the Lexington Rotary with you and answer any questions you may have. If you feel that our Rotary club is a good fit for you, we will help match you up with a sponsor, who will guide you through our membership process.
